šŸ“‰Your Buyers Don’t Care About Your Deck

Hey, Stephen here.

Just finished "Positioning."

One line really hit me:
"Positioning is perception."

That line stopped me.

Why? Because for years, working in B2B—both US and China—I've watched leadership teams (myself included!) build positioning from the inside out.

We all do it.
Product features, fancy tech, why we are different. We build slide decks and sales pitches stacked with what's unique…
and forget what actually matters.

Let's be real:
Most of us secretly hope people "get it" because of our hard work and innovation.

But guess what?
It doesn't work that way.

Positioning is perception.
It's about what's in your prospect's mind—not yours.

Quick story—

Years ago, helped a client with a SaaS launch in China.
We had the goods—features the market hadn't seen.
We expected excitement.
But… nothing.
Deals stalled, meetings fizzled.

Why?
We never asked, "What will our prospects think when they see us for the first time?"
To them, we were just another foreign vendor. Different didn't mean better—it meant more risk.

When we finally shifted focus to "what does this mean for you,"
prospects saw the value.
Deals closed.

Big lesson:
Your buyers aren't reading your pitch deck through your eyes.
They're asking,
"Does this help me?"
"Do I trust these people?"
"Will it make my life easier—or harder?"

Now, before working on any positioning, I flip it:

  • Step into your prospect's shoes

  • Listen

  • Test (not guess!)

  • Find out what truly matters in their world

Don't build messaging for your boardroom ego—build it for what actually lands in prospects' overloaded, distracted minds.

Stand out by seeing your company the way your prospects do.

Not a sharper tagline.
Not more features.
Just sharper empathy.

What's one positioning assumption you've made about your market that turned out to be completely wrong?

  • Untamed — This Netflix murder mystery set in Yosemite National Park kept me guessing until the very end, which is always a win in my book. While the storyline itself is decent, the real star here is the absolutely stunning Yosemite scenery that honestly outshines the plot – sometimes Mother Nature is the best screenwriter of all.
